The Alfred University men’s and women’s track and field teams finished sixth and ninth, respectively, at the New York State outdoor championship at RPI April 30-May 1.

“It was close for a bit there,” junior Melissa Haahr (Oswego, NY/ Tioga) said about the women’s ninth place finish. “We were tied with Naz for eighth place, duking it out, but they beat us in the end.”

The men’s team was lead by junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) who won the state title in shot put (14.13 meters) and was runner-up in the discus (40.49).

Student Senate budgets

05/01/2010

Although many clubs received budgets significantly under the amount requested, most club leaders are satisfied with their budgets for the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year.

“It wasn’t ideal,” Kanakadea Yearbook editor Zach Grosser said, “but with a little bit of rollover [from last year’s budget], [adviser] Dan Napolitano’s guidance, and the yearbook company’s support, we’ll make it happen regardless.”

The funding requested was nearly $190,000, almost double that of last year, although Student Senate finance chair Ann Halbert-Brooks did admit that last year was a low request year.

Scott, a visiting professor of art history at Alfred University, has taught at the College of William and Mary and at Binghamton University. She is an expert on the art produced during the student and workers' revolt of May 1968 in France.

CSA Fashion Show afterparty ends in chaos

04/04/2010

Four students were allegedly arrested after a fight broke out at the Caribbean Student Association Fashion Show afterparty early Sunday morning in the Knight Club.

“It was such a great show,” said Correy Loftin, President of CSA. “And it turned out to be a good show even though participation didn't go well.”

The fight, however, did not help the evening.

“It ruined the whole night,” senior Hector Colon said.

The arrests for violent crimes have risen dramatically in juvenile girls since 1983, according to Meda Chesney-Lind, a professor in Women's Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Chesney-Lind's speech was a part of Alfred University’s annual Riley Lectureship in Women’s Studies, which began in 1996. Chesney-Lind is a celebrated criminologist and author of several books dealing with the subject of girls and violence.

New Student Senate president attempts change

03/19/2010

Ana Devlin-Gauthier was announced the winner of the Student Senate Presidential election on March 3 during the Senate meeting.

Devlin-Gauthier was elected with 53 percent of the vote, while Peter Nyitrai received 26 percent and Nathan Martell received 19 percent.

Upon announcement of her victory, President Devlin-Gauthier proceeded to run the rest of the meeting. The transition, which would be considered by some as being far from ceremonious, consisted mainly of Devlin-Gauthier jumping for former President Amos Mainville’s keys as he jokingly held them above her head.

No more delay, vote today

02/25/2010

Elections began yesterday after failed communication between the Student Senate Executive Board and the Student Senate Elections Committee resulted in a one-week delay for Student Senate president and vice president elections.

According to Kevin Carr, chair of the Elections Committee, the problem was the result of a "miscommunication" between Elections Committee members.

Prior to the missed president and vice president election, two elections had to be held for new Elections Committee members, since two Elections Committee members decided to run for president and vice president.
