Western Equestrian team saddles up for double header

01/30/2010

The Western Equestrian team is hosting two shows this Saturday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The event will feature all of the teams in the region: SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Oswego, Nazareth College, Cazenovia College and RIT.

Alfred's Western team is in the top three of the region, and the members emphasize that this weekend's show, in combination with the one following it in Rochester, will determine who will go to the semi-finals.

"Its our only home show of the season, so we'd love all of the students' support," says junior Natalie Grow.

AU Swimming and Diving preparing for the NY state championships

02/12/2010

The Alfred University men’s swimming and diving team beat Hartwick with a 175-125 victory last Saturday. The AU women lost, 161-109.

The Saxons finished the regular season with a 7-2 record in dual meets (4-1 Empire 8). Senior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) carried the men'ss team with three wins coming from the 100-yard backstroke (54.16 seconds), 50-yard freestyle (21.86) and 200-yard back (2:01.66). The women (2-8, 1-4 Empire 8) were carried by freshman Kylie Smith (Abington, PA/Abington). Smith won 1-meter diving (182.30 points) and 3-meter diving (179.15).

AFC-NFC 2010 Pro Bowl – was it real football?

02/12/2010

The 2010 Pro Bowl on Jan. 24 was successful as far as sales and TV Cable ratings are concerned. In fact, the crowd of 70,697 was the largest since the Pro Bowl of 1959 in Los Angeles, and the ratings were the highest they have been in a decade. And I suppose if the game is meant to be played merely for fun and not to be viewed as a serious football game, then it can be ruled a success in that sense as well. However, does that really make up for the fact that 40% of the players selected did not play, and among those absent were Payton Manning and Drew Brees (the Super Bowl quarterbacks)?

Equestfest a huge success

01/30/2010

Barbecue, horses, mechanical bulls and line dancing… in Alfred? That’s right. Equestfest 2010 was put on by the AU Equestrian team in conjunction with the Powell Dining Hall staff.

As I walked into the Equestrian Center in Alfred where the event was held, I felt a flashback into old western times. I could hear the music playing, and through the windows, I could see a group of people showing off their best line dancing moves.

Club Hockey holds alumni game

02/01/2010

The Alfred Club Hockey team had their alumni game this past weekend, Jan. 30, along with a game versus Oneonta at their home rink.

The alumni had a great time reuniting with college friends and teammates. The current team faced a though and exciting game against one of its bitter rivals and played a good game.

The game had highlights including freshman Kris Carlson from Alfred State breaking the rink's glass with and amazing body hit and all around good playing by both teams.

AU women's swimming and diving concludes in 'Cuse

02/25/2010

The AU women’s swimming and diving team placed 13th with a score of 195 points at the New York State championship meet that ended last Saturday in Syracuse. Alfred was in the meet with 17 other teams for the three day event, which took place at Nottingham High School. Ithaca won the championship with a score of 1,403 points followed by Stevens in a close second place with 1,228 points.

AU basketball teams have a difficult journey ahead

02/12/2010

The Saxons have shown signs of improvement in the last two weeks, stringing together two clutch wins on their three game homestand. One of these victories was an Empire 8 conference game against Hartwick, an important win for the struggling Saxons' 1-8 record thus far. This victory secured the second Empire 8 conference win for the team. Although they were able to pull out the win, it did not come easily as the score was at a dead draw 62-62 with just a single minute in regulation time remaining.

WHO DAT?! - A victory for the city of New Orleans

02/11/2010

The Saints came back from a 10-0 deficit to claim the 44th Superbowl. Many people favored the Colts due to their genius of a quarterback Peyton Manning, but when the final score read 31-17 Saints at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, everybody knew that the game wasn’t just about how fast, strong or football-smart a team is; it was about heart as well.

Quarterback and MVP Drew Brees or Breesus, as he’s known in New Orleans, is an icon to the team and to the city. He has been a firm believer ever since he came to the team just after Katrina that the city and the team can come back from anything.

Team USA ready to make a mark in the Vancouver Games

02/11/2010

While the NHL started its two-week Olympic hiatus Saturday morning, hockey fans have the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games to look forward to on schedule.

Russia and Canada enter in as the predicted gold and silver teams respectively. Team USA, however, finds themselves in a familiar underdog position.

Geneseo beats the AU swimming and diving teams

01/30/2010

The Geneseo Blue Knights beat both the Saxon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams on Jan. 23 in Geneseo. Geneseo beat the AU men, 166-125. This was the Saxon men’s first dual-meet loss of the season and puts Alfred at 6-1, 3-0 Empire 8. The Geneseo women's team defeated AU, 159-110.

Colts vs. Saints: a showdown in Miami

01/30/2010

Super Bowl XLIV brings out two of the best quarterbacks that the NFL has to offer. Peyton Manning, the leader of the Indianapolis Colts potent offense, looks to win his second Super Bowl in just 4 years. Drew Brees is looking to get his first as he carries the New Orleans Saints into the Super Bowl for the first time in team history.
